ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

On May 28, two opera premieres will take place in the White Column Hall of Princess Shakhovskaya at the Helikon Opera Theater, marking a new stage in exploring the possibilities of the genre. Viewers will witness two one-act operas in the horror genre:

The evening’s program will open with the world premiere of the opera “Zhdana” by the young Russian composer Alina Nebykova. This is a mini-opera about a family secret and a family curse based on the story of the same name by Alexei Nebykov. The work will come to life performed by the leading soloists of the Helikon Opera Alexandra Kovalevich and Sergei Ababkin, as well as the vocal ensemble ARIELLE and with choreography by masters of sports in aesthetic gymnastics and participants in the “Dancing” show on TNT Anastasia and Victoria Mikhailets.

The second number of the program will be the famous one-act opera “Proving” by the American composer Missy Mazzoli based on the story of the same name by Karen Russell, which the festival will present for the first time not only in Russia, but also on the Eurasian continent. The story tells the story of the American dream through the history of Nebraska settlers in the 1870s. Missy Mazzoli is a composer-in-residence for Opera Philadelphia, National Ballet of Canada, Chicago Lyric Opera and Norwegian National Opera. In 2018, Missy became one of the first two women, along with Jeanine Tesori, to be commissioned to write an opera for the Metropolitan Opera and was nominated for a Grammy Award. In Russia, Missy Mazzoli will be performed for the first time and will be performed by Bolshoi Theater soloists Zhasur Khaidarov and Vasilisa Shaplyko, Mariinsky Theater soloist Pelageya Kurennaya, finalists of the TV show “The Voice. No longer children” by David Sanikidze, soloist of Carnegie Hall in New York and producer of the project Yulia Petrachuk, soloist of the Moscow Conservatory Theater Kirill Panfilov and the Art Music Orchestra led by British conductor Jeremy Walker.

The Muffled Voices Festival is the I International Festival of Contemporary Chamber Opera by Women Composers, dedicated to the memory and 80th anniversary of composer Tatyana Chudova. The festival not only pays tribute to women composers, but also seeks to shed light on chamber opera as a genre that can subtly reveal the deepest aspects of the human soul.
