ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Alexander Borisovich Zhurbin (Алекса́ндр Бори́сович Журби́н; born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 7 August 1945) is a Russian composer
Synopsis:
England, early 18th century. Residence of Queen Anne Stuart.
It is here that amazing events unfold, the sequence of which can be compared to a long chain of moves in a complex chess game. It is led by sophisticated palace politicians, the Duchess of Marlborough and Sir Bolingbroke.
For the first, a war with France is beneficial, because her husband, Marshal Marlborough, commands the English army and is not at all interested in ending the military campaign, which depletes the state treasury, but successfully fills his pockets.
For the second, peace is at hand, but only as a counterbalance to the interests of the duchess; his goal is to regain influence at court and the once lost position of minister.
Into this abyss of political clashes falls young Abigail Halifax, as well as her fiancé, young Arthur Mesham, who turns out to be the object of the love passion of two of the most influential ladies – Queen Anne and her favorite, the Duchess of Marlborough.
The struggle for power becomes especially acute when feelings of love and jealousy are woven into it. It is they who enable Sir Bolingbroke to successfully manipulate the current circumstances. He skillfully, like a grandmaster, moves every “piece” on the “chessboard” of the palace structure: the French ambassador Marquis de Torcy, and Captain Arthur Mesham, and, of course, Abigail will make their “move”.
For this young lady, Bolingbroke prescribed especially important steps that will help her reach the “opposite side of the board” and receive her well-deserved reward. The queen will make her “move” too! But can a person in power choose love? Or, like moving the king in a game of chess, is her choice just an illusion?
