ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
To mark the Verdi Year, ARTE is offering a program with archive recordings of great conductors and performers. On a true journey through time, the film shows their remarkable performances: in 1943, Arturo Toscanini conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra with the overture from “La forza del destino” (The Power of Destiny), and in 1968, Carlo Maria Giulini conducted recordings for the BBC Orchestra and choir of the New Philharmonia with the overture from “I vespri siciliani” (The Sicilian Vespers) and the “Stabat Mater” from “Quattro pezzi sacri” (Four Sacred Pieces). The finale is two legendary Verdi interpreters, namely Tito Gobbi with an aria from “Falstaff” and the unforgettable Maria Callas with an aria from “Il trovatore” (The Troubadour), sung in 1958.
