ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

De Simone, who staged Trianon Opera with Davide Iodice , for the television direction of Claudia De Toma , explains that the show “first of all intends to be a historical and anthropological exploration of Neapolitan religiosity at both the Jesuit and popular level” , around a “written document that acts as an exploratory hinge: the work Il vero Lume tra le ombre – better known as La Cantata dei pastori – by the Jesuit playwright Andrea Perrucci, printed in 1698 and first performed in that same year” .

The author had already been interested in the Cantata with a staging in 1974 at the San Ferdinando theater and with a television version in 1977, the first color production of the Rai headquarters in Naples. More recently with an essay published by Einaudi in 2000.

“Written in Italian and Neapolitan verses, the Cantata was performed during the Christmas period, both in parish theaters and in popular theaters, by amateur actors flanked by professional actors, undergoing changes, additions, circus transformations, and republished year by year by the different companies throughout the eighteenth century, and then in the nineteenth century by other Neapolitan editions, documenting their religious and ritual vitality up to the first half of the twentieth century, for just over two hundred and fifty years “. «But Trianon Opera it does not presuppose a revivalist philology relating to Christmas – explains De Simone -, nor a re-proposal as an exemplary model with respect to a secular text, which today has definitively emerged from the tradition, which died out around 1970, when it no longer produced authentic devotional representations: of passages of the work is made use of a transposition with the IPA ( International phonetic alphabet , that is the international phonetic alphabet) of the Perrucciano text, according to the historical oral pronunciation of Italian by the actors of the Neapolitan tradition, making the verbal meaning, as befits a sacred text ».

“The musical part refers, among other things, to the virtuoso participation of the famous emasculated sopranos – adds the author – who, in the eighteenth century, devotionally, during the Christmas period, in churches and parish theaters performed for a large audience, both although culturally differentiated “. Here is a series of arias of skill, interpreted by the soprano Maria Grazia Schiavo , composed by Carmine Giordani (Giordano), Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Domenico Cimarosa, Riccardo Broschi, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Leonardo Vinci and also Vincenzo Bellini, with a final piece by De Simone himself, performed by the soloists of the orchestra the New Polyphony directed by Alessandro De Simone .

«In the end I hope to have poetically conjugated – concludes the master De Simone – History and methistory, writing and orality, official religiosity and popular Christianity, richness of tradition and degraded emptiness of theatrical, musical and cinematographic contemporaneity; however, the music and television images of the present melodrama must be considered as medieval allegories and multisignificant metaphors ».

The story sees the Virgin Mary and Joseph , respectively played by Michele Imparato and Pino Mauro , looking for a safe shelter in Bethlehem, where they can give birth to the Baby Jesus. Their journey is hindered by Belfegor ( Rosario Toscano ), the devil, with the intent to prevent that the power of good arrives on earth and that humanity can be redeemed from original sin. At the same time the couple is protected by the sword of Gabriel Archangel ( Veronica D’Elia). Both the Archangel and the devil, during the story, resort to various disguises, showing themselves one as a wanderer and a sibyl and the other as a thief and tavern keeper. To these well-known and sacred characters, there are others of a profane nature, such as the old shepherd Armenzio ( Antonio Buonomo ) with his son Benino ( Luca Lubrano ), the fisherman Ruscellio ( Biagio Musella ), the Neapolitan scribe Razzullo ( Oscar Di Maio) ), sent by the emperor to Bethlehem for the birth census. The puppets are by Flavia D’Aiello .
