If Romeo and Juliet by Charles Gounod, created during the Universal Exhibition of 1867, immediately won popular success, it is undoubtedly because it translated the most finely the life drive of the famous lovers. Four love duets, a fiery waltz, luminous and lyrical music: the whole score quivers with desire and freshness.
