What is the opera “Obsessed” about?
Myroslav Volynskyi, composer: ” In opera, I am primarily attracted by strong personalities, strong feelings, strong actions. All this is in Lesya Ukrainka’s dramaturgy, and not only in the drama “Possessed”, because my first opera was based on “Forest Song” by Lesya Ukrainka, and “Cassandra” also attracted me. The plot was suggested to me by my wife Anna, to whom the opera is dedicated.”
Marina Ryzhova, director: “In my opinion, the story of “Possessed” has an extremely personal and even intimate context, hidden behind biblical images. The story of Lesya Ukrainka and Serhiy Merzhynsky seems to be on the surface here, but all the dramatic productions that I have seen are reduced to the illustration of the cross and crown of thorns on the stage. For me, this story is, first of all, about women’s pain, and not about the torments of the biblical messiah . That’s why I tried to move away from the religious background as far as possible and get closer to understanding the psychology of a woman who endures everything because she loves.”
