The opera, with a libretto by Piero Schlochauer and Beatriz Porto, presents a family drama with a non-linear narrative. The plot revolves around a knife sharpener who offers his services on the street, addressing themes such as Alzheimer’s and grief. The work is a family drama, narrated in a non-linear way, which has as its backdrop the appeal of the knife sharpener offering his services on the street.
In 2021, the Brazilian Forum of Opera, Dance and Concert Music (FB-ODM) launched a competition to encourage the creation of new operas composed by Brazilians, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Brazil’s Independence and the 100th anniversary of the Semana de Arte Moderna. The competition, supported by theaters and cultural entities from all over the country, crowned the work “O Afiador de Facas” (The Knife Sharpener), by Piero Schlochauer, as the winner.
