The Solemn Mass in honor of Saint Cecilia is a musical composition by the French composer Charles Gounod . It is his best-known work outside of his operas .
Composed for soprano , tenor and bass , mixed choir and large orchestra, it was created on November 22 (or 29), 1855 at the Saint-Eustache church in Paris 1 , on the occasion of the feast of Saint Cécile , patroness musicians.
