ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
In 1967, the Lithuanian dramatist Juozas Grušas wrote the tragicomedy “Love, Jazz and the Devil” in which he depicted the spiritual emptiness of youth, the disastrous collision of good and evil.
We invite you to look at this work in a different way.
Today, when the atrocities that are happening make you doubt the person and the whole world, Hope can be, and sometimes is the only thing that helps you not to give up. But what prevents us from being hopeful?
In our opera we ask:
“And where did Hope go?”
Four friends – Beatrice (Beta), Andrius, Julius and Lukas – spend time in “Katile”. Not only does jazz play here and fierce dances take place – intrigues are woven here, youthful passion, rebellion, love and jealousy simmer. Andrius contradicts the rules of moral life, orphan Lukas suffers loneliness, philosophical Julius postulates about the fallen world.
And Beatrice … is Hope.
The boys cannot imagine their lives without Beatrice, they adore and despise her at the same time.
When Beta’s intimate diary is snubbed and taken to the vice principal, she loses her mind and ends up in a mental hospital.
Beta’s Madness changes her and strengthens her desire to understand and change her friends.
She will look for the reasons why Andrius is angry with his father and uncontrollably pours out his rage on everyone he comes across.
In the town square, Beta will meet Zina and learn about Julius’ past mistakes.
Beatrice will listen to Luke’s confession about his painful childhood.
But will the found, hurt and hurting guys be able to change?
