ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
In its original version of 1867 for small orchestra, organ, choir and soloists reconstituted by A. Vigneron (ed. Diem).
Painful subject among all: the veneration of the seven words pronounced by Jesus crucified, taken from the four gospels, which became a subject of meditation, of spiritual exercise. This oratorio is undoubtedly Théodore Dubois’ best-known work. The work, commissioned in 1867 by the parish priest of Sainte-Clotilde in Paris for Good Friday, was first of all intended for a small instrumental and vocal formation, using the usual means of a Parisian parish of the second half of the 19th century, but the oratorio was so successful that it was quickly re-orchestrated for a full orchestra to be played at Pasdeloup concerts in Paris and around the world.
The original score having disappeared, it was necessary to reconstitute the work with a whole research work to finally propose this initial version.
