ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Nicola Porpora (Naples 1686-1768) contributed decisively to the diffusion and affirmation of the Italian opera of the Neapolitan school in Austria and Germany. Connoisseur of all the secrets associated with vocal virtuosity, his works also include L’Angelica, a serenata (i.e. dramatic cantata usually performed outdoors), with a libretto by Pietro Metastasio inspired by the poems of Ariosto and Boiardo, performed for the first time in Naples in 1720 at the palace of the prince of Torella for the birthday of the Empress Elisabeth Christina of Brunswick. For the occasion, Porpora’s most famous pupil – who was also a renowned singing teacher – made his debut at the age of fifteen, namely Carlo Broschi known as Farinelli.
