Verdi’s opera was called “a disgusting example of immorality and obscene triviality” by censors. So Verdi and his librettist Francesco Piave made concessions: Francis became an anonymous 16th-century duke of a now-extinct Mantuan dynasty. Triboulet became Rigoletto and Blanche became Gilda.

Its original name was La Maledizione . And this version, prior to censorship, of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, is presented at the Lucho Gatica Regional Theater in Rancagua.

This rescue project has been led by Gian Paolo Martelli, who had already announced the initiative in November last year to Radio Beethoven.
«We are going to do something very powerful with Verdi in Rancagua, I was in Italy on a long trip doing research linked to the group of the Parma 27 (Club dei 27) and the Institute of Verdian Studies. “That is going to be with the Philodramatic Orchestra,” he declared inRecommended.

«This had never been done, and we are doing it in Chile: being able to do what Verdi was prohibited from doing. The original title is La Maledizione , which musically is the true protagonist of the work, since the famous I curse you “, comments Gian Paolo Martelli.

«We know that the story is by Victor Hugo, from Le roi s’amuse , and Verdi makes La Maledizione which is prohibited, and then there are all the librettos until we get to Rigoletto . There were six librettos, three up to and including Rigoletto , and then three more librettos, and three more names that the work had, because it suffered a lot from censorship. The important thing is to be able to do exactly what Verdi wanted and, also, respecting the original score, as it was written, without cuts and with the notes that are written. Without anything that is not written because for the personal glory of the singers, versions are made where they put notes where they are not. “Exactly what Verdi wanted will be done here,” he assures.

There will also be a musical discovery. «We are going to do it with the complete score without cuts. And they will be surprised that a lost aria that had not been performed for 170 years was rescued, because it was only performed in France. We rescued the score and here in Chile you will be able to hear Magdalena’s lost aria from the third act live,” reveals the regisseur .

«This Rigoletto is an opportunity to see what Verdi was prohibited from doing, with a staging set in the France of Francis I of Valois, in the 16th century, just as Verdi wanted it. The opera is the same music, places and names change, but it is the same and in the original setting. We have been inspired by what was the old Louvre Castle that is where the museum is now, we were inspired by the Conciergerie , which is the building in front and which is the palace most similar to what this castle was that no longer exists. The staging will be very anchored in history,” says Gian Paolo Martelli.
