ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Among the anniversary dates around which the program of the Gorkovenko Festival was formed, a significant place is occupied by the 180th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov. Of the composer’s operas on fairy-tale plots, the one-act “autumn fairy tale” “Kashchei the Immortal” (plot by E. M. Petrovsky, libretto by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and S. N. Rimskaya-Korsakova) was chosen for the Festival.

The opera “Kashchei the Deathless” was written in 1902, absorbing new social meanings and stylistic searches that are still interesting today. The musical language of the “autumn fairy tale” is innovative: the instrumentation of “Kashchei the Deathless” was characterized as “a fairy tale of music, a miracle of wise craftsmanship.”

At the crossroads of centuries, during a period of heightened social tension in Russia, the opera’s five characters were seen by its contemporaries as “characters” of their time. Kashchei’s kingdom was associated with autocratic power, and Kashchei with the image of the then all-powerful chief prosecutor of the Synod Pobedonostsev, “with his glass eye that enchanted all of Russia” (A. Blok). Kashchei’s daughter is an image of the seductive suppression of freedom, and the personification of the elemental forces of the people are the knight Ivan the Prince and the hero Burya the hero.
