The opera is adapted from the novel of the same name, published in 1959. The original author, Chen Jing, was a participant in the Long March and one of the military writers who wrote about the Long March. *On the Banks of the Jinsha River* tells a moving story from the Long March, showcasing the profound bond between the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and the Tibetan people along the Jinsha River. The novel, with its profound and delicate writing, creates unforgettable artistic characters such as Jinming and Zhuoma, and has been adapted into a Pingju opera and a film of the same name, becoming a collective memory for generations of readers and audiences. The NCPA, always adhering to a people-centered creative approach, is committed to making the opera *On the Banks of the Jinsha River* a high-quality national opera that suits the aesthetic tastes of Chinese audiences.
A strong creative team comprised of renowned composer Lei Lei, playwrights Feng Baiming and Feng Bilie, conductor Zhang Guoyong, and director Liao Xianghong, among other artists, paid tribute to the classics with a meticulous artistic approach. Composer Lei Lei fully grasped the characteristics of ethnic music styles, collecting a wealth of Tibetan music from the Kham region as creative material, and skillfully blending ethnicity, regionality, and drama to reflect the new developments in ethnic opera creation in the new era. Playwrights Feng Baiming and Feng Bilie, while respecting the original novel, focused on deepening the themes, shaping characters, and refining the plot to make the script more suitable for the opera genre. Director Liao Xianghong led the creative team to the story’s setting, meticulously recreating the grand historical scenes based on historical facts and geographical features. Since the National Centre for the Performing Arts began creating the ethnic opera “On the Banks of the Jinsha River,” it has received widespread attention, hoping to awaken the memories of ethnic opera among generations of Chinese people through the creation and performance of this opera.
