As Yende prepares to make her San Francisco Opera debut in the new production of La Traviata, this music-rich episode of In Song opens a window into the world of this enchanting artist, following her home as she visits with her congregation and her family, and performs with the young students of her alma mater, the Ndlela Secondary School.

I remember on hearing Pretty Yende for the first time. It was in Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha in the Feather market Concert Hall. Pretty was still a young student then. That day I went back home and told my wife I heard a star, but the only way of getting that star to shine, was for her to leave the country. I wrote a letter to the local newspaper about the concert, and won a gift card at a local grocery store. Since then I followed her career. I use Pretty’s story in my classes when I have time to talk to my pupils about there future. Pretty’s message is: follow your dreams, and grab opportunities. Then then I show some of her YouTube-videos… the one where she sings with Andrea Boccelli in Central Park is a particular favourite.
