ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

“János Hunyadi became a bell ringing the world, Mátyás Hunyadi became a fabulous Renaissance statue of justice – László Hunyadi became “just” an opera. Opera, which is essentially about his younger brother, the last great Hungarian king, or at least the prelude to his reign. Our current effort is not aimed at the “resurrection” of László, who became the tragic prelude, reason and explanation for Mátyás Hunyadi’s accession to the throne. True, now, the original score, which can be heard again for the first time after almost ninety years, offers a great opportunity for the voice of the brave man executed at a young age to be heard. László Hunyadiits ancient music is a treasure trove, but not everything fits in the pockets. Everything from Ferenc Erkel, of course, except what he himself drew. But we have to decide on the text: instead of Béni Egressy’s fluctuating level and in many places stale turns of phrase, we choose revised versions in such a way that the drama cannot fade or become narrow. The task of our present production is to stage a period piece depicted from a higher point of view, and with it to present the artistic and technical possibilities of the reopened Opera House. Because there is only one opening opera premiere,” says Szilveszter Ókovács, the general director of the opera.

The performance of the work was realized from the score published in the framework of the Erkel Ferenc Operas critical publication series being prepared at the Department of Hungarian Music History of the Institute of Musicology of the Humanities Research Center .
