Bewitchingly beautiful game of deception: In his opera, which premiered in 2004, Toshio Hosokawa combines European musical traditions with influences from Japanese Noh theatre

For over a year, the formerly famous Hanako has been living mostly isolated from the world at Jitsuko’s. Every day, however, Hanako goes to the train station and hopes to meet her former lover Yoshio there – as a promise of reunion, the two had swapped fans. Hanako has been waiting for so long that the boundaries between reality and delusion are beginning to blur in her perception.

One day, when a newspaper article appears reporting on the “tragic romance” of the crazy Hanako, Jitsuko sees her secluded life with Hanako in danger: she desires the young woman and fears that if Yoshio returns, Hanako will be persuaded to go away with him. Even before both of them can leave town, there is actually a man in front of the door who calls himself Yoshio and is carrying said fan…

Toshio Hosokawa, who is one of the most important contemporary Japanese composers, combines Japanese and European musical traditions in his opera “Hanjo”, which premiered in 2004, into a fascinating and enchantingly beautiful game of deception that repeatedly leaves open and ambiguous where reality ends and fantasy begins.
