ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
This performance is a premiere to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the death of Lee Won-rok, a member of the military academy, in 2024, and is the prelude to the performances commemorating the 80th anniversary of liberation in 2025.
‘Flower of the Wilderness, Yuksa Lee’ was planned as part of the ‘Ungdo Gyeongbuk’s Figures Stand on Stage’ series, a cultural and artistic project that captures the identity of Gyeongbuk. This series is a project that has been continuously promoted to promote Gyeongbuk’s patriotic spirit and scholarly spirit.
This work is centered around the poet Lee Yuk-sa’s sensibility and independence movement, which protected the conscience of the people during the Japanese colonial period and fought for independence, and his poems that magnificently sing of the undying national spirit under colonial rule.
Director Lee Young-ki expressed his confidence in the work, saying, “I did my best to fully capture Lee Yuk-sa’s love for the country and noble spirit of sacrifice in an opera.” Director Lee Sang-min said, “Lee Yuk-sa’s poetry contains messages that are sharper and more intense than a sword,” and he focused on how to express the pain and hope of the people conveyed through his poetry in the comprehensive art form of opera.
