ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Dolls have been the fascinating and ghostly companions of humans since the dawn of civilization. They may have different purposes, but they all serve their creators as silent companions, gods, and slaves, thus betraying three great dreams of humanity: creative power, perfection, and immortality. Even before the legend of the sculptor Pygmalion and his statue brought to life, doll makers have dreamed of breathing real life into these lifeless imitations of humans. With mechanics, electronics, and vast amounts of data, this goal seems imminent. In the dark, however, a scarecrow and a little imagination are still enough to bring matter to life.
Christof Dienz’s music for eleven musicians of the renowned ensemble PHACE, Anna Hauf as the wordless voice, and Jakob Scheid’s automatic drummer, creates a powerful atmosphere and reflects the strangeness of similarity. Kristine Tornquist and the nine actors of the Serapions Ensemble illuminate the mysterious relationship between people and their puppets in a silent sequence of scenes. The sets are by Marlen Duken, Markus, and Michael Liszt. Jan Maria Lukas provides the lighting, and François-Pierre Descamps conducts.
