ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

A journey through two centuries of fascinating music history: Well-known Beethoven experts – Andris Nelsons, Joana Mallwitz, Riccardo Chailly and Klaus Mäkelä – shed light on the creation of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and explain how its message has been repeatedly reinterpreted over time. What does the work and its message of joy tell us today?
Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth is a key symphonic work and today a symbol of the unity of Europe. 200 years after its premiere in 1824, it is time to draw a current picture of its origins and journey through the centuries.
We discover the valuable original manuscripts in the Berlin State Library, the British Library and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Actor Christian Kuchenbuch takes on the role of Beethoven: with letters and diary entries, he awakens the feelings and thoughts of a person at the end of life who is struggling with increasing deafness.
The four world stars on the podium, who will conduct Beethoven’s Ninth on the anniversary on May 7th, talk about their relationship to the work. Klaus Mäkelä is absolutely fascinated by the aura of the original manuscript, which was included in the World Documentary Heritage by UNESCO. Joana Mallwitz explains the structure of the last movement grippingly on the piano and we watch Andris Nelsons and Riccardo Chailly studying the score.
Iconic archive recordings illustrate political appropriations of the symphony that could hardly be more contradictory – from the fascist propaganda of the Nazi regime to the fall of the Berlin Wall. And what makes Beethoven’s Ninth resonate in us today? Did Schiller and Beethoven’s vision of brotherhood remain just an unattainable utopia?
“The Power of Music – 200 Years of Beethoven’s Ninth” introduces us to the work and its history and makes us curious about the subsequent concert broadcasts from Leipzig, Paris, Milan and Vienna.
