ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Deborah Joy Voigt (born August 4, 1960) is an American opera singer (soprano).
Voigt was born into a religious family belonging to the Southern Baptist Convention and grew up in Wheeling, Illinois; When she was 14, the family moved to Orange County, California. Voigt sang in gospel choirs at an early age and won various singing competitions. She only became seriously interested in singing when she was specifically encouraged by her singing teacher, music professor Jane Paul, and sent to high-ranking singing competitions.
In 1988 she made her singing debut at Carnegie Hall. She sang at all major opera stages and is considered one of the best dramatic sopranos of her time. She sang numerous roles at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, including Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung. In 2003 she appeared as Isolde in a new production of Tristan and Isolde at the Vienna State Opera. She also frequently hosts the live cinema broadcasts from the Met.
In 2004, she underwent gastric surgery to reduce the size of her stomach after she was removed from the cast of the Royal Opera House, where she was supposed to sing “Ariadne auf Naxos,” due to her size. In 2013 she was honored at the Grammy Awards.
Deborah Voigt lives in Florida.
