  De Oorlog is Peter Benoit’s magnum opus. He composed the oratorio between 1869 and 1873 on a text by Jan Van Beers. The last recording of The War dates from November 1993, when the work was performed for three evenings in Antwerp’s Queen Elisabeth Hall. The BRTN Philharmonic Orchestra was conducted by Lucas Vis and was flanked by the BRTN Koor, the Nederlands Concertkoor, Vocant, the Arenbergkoor, the Renaat Veremanskoor, Cantabile, In Dulci Jubilo and Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino. Soloists were Yvonne Schiffelers, Cathérine Vandevelde, Nadia Loenders, Zeger Vandersteene, Charles van Tassel, Werner Van Mechelen, François Van Eetvelt and Jaco Huypen. The then BRTN recorded the concert and broadcast it on radio and television. The Peter Benoit Fund obtained a license from the VRT to make the TV recording available online. You can view this masterful work here, awaiting a new performance with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, scheduled for the 2022-2023 concert season.
