Coscoletto, or Le lazzarone is an operetta in two acts composed by Jacques Offenbach on a libretto by Charles Nuitter and Étienne Tréfeu . It was premiered in Bad Ems on July 16, 1865 .
This operetta – created in German or in French – was composed for the holidaymakers of the spa where Offenbach was staying. Directed by the composer himself, the reception of the work is described as enthusiastic:
“We repeated the serenade, the tarantella, the round, we would have repeated everything if the poor singers had not asked for mercy.”
Expected at the Bouffes-Parisiens the following autumn 6 , the piece was not performed there, because Offenbach was preoccupied with other projects. The work was not premiered in Paris during the composer’s lifetime.
Synopsis
Naples . Vesuvius rumbles.
Polycarpo, a rope maker , and Arsenico, a pharmacist , are both in love with Mariana, the beautiful wife of Frangipani, the macaroni merchant .
Coscoletto, a lazzarone , is paid by Polycarpo to sing under Mariana’s windows, but he only addresses his serenades to the neighbor, the charming florist Delfina with whom he is also in love. He thus has an alibi against the suspicions of the terribly jealous husband Frangipani.
However, when an anonymous love letter, written by Polycarpo and hidden in a bouquet of flowers, reaches Delfina instead of Mariana, confusion begins. Delfina, illiterate , asks Mariana to help her write a reply to what she believes to be a letter from her mysterious lover.
After a series of twists and turns and misunderstandings involving a volcano, a love potion, promises of revenge and a meal of poisoned macaroni, Coscoletto wins Delfina’s love and Mariana remains faithful to her husband.
