ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Cheosa Nammyeong is a historical drama (although some fiction is added)
The historical background of the opera Cheosa Nammyeong:
Jungjong, who ascended to the throne through the Jungjong Rebellion, reformed the corruption of Yeonsangun.
Those who were sacrificed in the two purges were promoted to the new and prestigious Sarim faction.
28 people were selected through the Hyeonryang examination, and 23 of them were pro-Jo Gwang-jo faction members.
In response, the Hungu ministers (Hungu faction) feel suspicious and have a sense of crisis.
Among the 117 meritorious subjects selected by the Jungjong Restoration, 76 were clear
Since they received meritorious service without merit, they were removed from the list of meritorious subjects, their titles were stripped, and their fields and slaves were returned to the state, which caused the incident of the deletion of meritorious service. King Jungjong was feeling sickened by the radical and exclusive attitude of the new scholars. I suspect that the deletion of the royal seal is an attempt to drive the Jungjong Rebellion into a case of treason. King Jungjong, who sided with young scholars like Jo Gwang-jo, secretly sent a secret message to his ministers to plan a campaign against Jo Gwang-go and his followers.
14th year of King Jungjong’s reign in Joseon, the Gimiosahwa Incident
Nam Gon, Sim Jeong, Hong Gyeong-ju, and others write “Juchowiwang” in honey on leaves in the palace garden with the intention of killing Jo Gwang-jo and his men, and let bugs eat them.
The people wonder what is happening when they see the words “Juchowiwang” written on a leaf. At this time, a suspicious person appears and incites the people’s sentiments by saying that if Ju and Cho are combined, they will become Jo, and that a person with the Jo surname will become king. The people hide their true feelings and pretend to be foolish on the outside, and the new scholars are purged.
Nammyeong laments the people who are sacrificed in the struggle for political power and the situation he is in.
Nammyeong Seonsaeng was not afraid to tell the truth, and he was a person who raised righteous army leaders in preparation for foreign invasion. Gwak Jae-u, whom we are most familiar with, was also raised by Nammyeong Seonsaeng.
