  The opera is about a young woman, Julia, whose beloved Alfons died a year ago. Julia’s father, who is the mayor of a town called Kwirlikwicz, wants her to marry the pharmacist Fantuzjusz, an old and not very attractive man. Desperate Julia does not believe in the death of her beloved and demands a death certificate from Konsyliarzowa. Konsyliarzowa, herself in love with Alfons, forges the document, because she knows that Alfons is alive. Meanwhile, the magician Alinat appears in Kwirlikwicz, who promises to resurrect the deceased Alfonso.
  The opera has a cheerful character, except for a gloomy scene in the cemetery, when Alphonsus turns out to be the eponymous Charlatan. The piece tells the story of unconditional love facing cruel, calculated intrigues, but the story ultimately ends with a happy ending.
