100 years after her birth, RAI Cultura dedicates a special evening to Maria Callas.
Who was really the Divine? In Greece, even today, they simply call her “Maria”. For us Italians, on the other hand, she is above all “la Callas”. That is, the myth, the legend, the “Divine”, the one who changed the world of opera forever. She wrote: «Singing, for me, is not an act of pride, but only an attempt to rise towards those skies where everything is in harmony». Among exclusive testimonies, interviews, repertoire, singing and the direct story of the protagonist herself, Corrado Augias leads us to discover the secrets of “Maria”, and how Maria became “la Callas”. A journey through places, loves, successes and falls of an artist who has quickly become a legend. Until her tragic epilogue: cardiac arrest that strikes her in her home in Paris, at just 54 years old. She had had time to dictate her last will to her faithful maid: “Scatter my ashes in the Aegean Sea. I will embrace my Aristotle across the sea.”

His ability as a great storyteller, Augias alternates with that of curious and passionate about music, ready to “interrogate” teachers, witnesses, experts on the magic of Callas’s voice. Travel companions will be: the conductor Speranza Scappucci, the opera expert journalist Alberto Mattioli, Monica Bellucci, who played Maria Callas in the theatre, Stefano Belisari, aka Elio, a fan of opera, the biographer and director Tom Volf and Giovanna Lomazzi, a great friend of Maria Callas. And above all, an exceptional repertoire – often in color (a rarity) – which traces the travels, interviews, shows and most famous arias of the divine Callas.
