The playwright Gabrielius Landsbergis-Žemkalnis and the composer Mikas Petrauskas were to become the creators of the first Lithuanian opera:
An inspiring plot from the heroic past of Lithuania was chosen for the opera’s libretto, when our country survived the times of greatest power. The main character of the opera was Birutė, the daughter of Palanga’s father, who, according to a popular legend, was not ordained to play, because she was admired and later married by Duke Kęstutis.
