ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
This is the last opera by Lully not to have been shown since the revival of interest in baroque music. The public who did not have the chance to attend the concert series given by Christophe Rousset and his Talens Lyriques will finally be able to discover the work thanks to this recording. The work is not lacking in charm, and we can let ourselves be seduced by the beautiful libretto by Thomas Corneille, which recounts the revenge of Queen Stenobeus, outraged by the indifference of Bellerophon, meanwhile in love with the daughter of the king of Lycia, Philonoe. Sténobée asks the magician Amisodar, in love with the charms of his queen, to give life to a monstrous creature destined to destroy Bellerophon. But the latter, riding Pegasus, will make short work of the fearsome Chimera, and may at the end of the journey marry the chosen one of his heart…
Second collaboration of Thomas Corneille and Jean-Baptiste Lully, due to the temporary disgrace of Philippe Quinault, the work, created in 1679, marks an important evolution on the path of the creation of opera in France; lyrical tragedy finds a new balance between action, text, music, dance and all the other ingredients of opera
