To the sounds of Saint-Saëns’ “Samson and Dalila,” the stagehands rise up from the stage basement on a large lift to then begin their work on the boards that mean the world. The men work in shifts on the stage of the Vienna State Opera from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., sometimes with a loud rumble in the otherwise empty house and then again with whisper quiet so as not to disturb rehearsals or performances.
