Tragedy in five acts with prologue on a libretto by Philippe Quinault created in Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1676.
The two myths of Atys come together in this new production: this masterpiece by Lully and Quinault, which was called “The King’s Opera” from its creation in 1676 before the court, was also three centuries later a strengthened by the rediscovery of the great French baroque operas by the Christie-Villégier show presented at the Royal Opera of Versailles on two occasions.
Atys is a paroxysm of nascent lyrical art: it puts love at the center of the plot, and its hero, for the first time with Lully, dies on stage, provoking a sumptuous lamentation, which draws tears to the heart of the more hardened. The incredible music of Lully comes to magnify the splendid tragic text of Philippe Quinault, creating their first joint masterpiece.
The time has come for a new version, which combines the musical ardor of Leonardo García Alarcón and the choreographic splendor of Angelin Preljocaj, to give back to the marvels of Atys the happiness of subjecting the souls of the public to so many charms and tears. …. The Opéra Royal de Versailles has joined forces with the Grand Théâtre de Genève for this new production, made possible by the exceptional support of Madame Aline Foriel-Destezet.
