The Harlequinade is a comic interlude in one act composed by Antonio Salieri with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte , present in the fourth act of the tragicomic drama Axur, Re d’Ormus , performed in 1788. Subsequently, in 1958, the revision and the interlude was edited by Cesare Brero ; in the same year the first performance of this version took place, which took place in Montevideo in Uruguay .
Plot
In exchange for two rings, Colombina promised to marry both Brighella and Arlecchino . Having discovered the cheating, the two lovers want explanations from Colombina. The latter then proposes to play a game: Brighella and Arlecchino will be blindfolded, the first one who manages to hug her will be her husband. While the two try to grab her, Colombina disguises herself as a witch and gets caught by both of them who suddenly no longer show interest in her. Having stripped herself of her disguise, Colombina declares that neither Brighella nor Arlecchino will marry her, as they are only in love with her and her physical appearance.
