ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Anita is an opera in one act and fourteen scenes with a libretto by Enrico Golisciani set to music by Melesio Morales .
Synopsis
The action takes place in Puebla on April 2, 1867. Anita is reading in her living room, while in the street there are sounds of popular revolts. Her brother Manuelo is visited by Rodrigo, a fellow soldier, who confesses that he is in love with his sister, fearing that his love will not be reciprocated. He also informs her that that night there will be an attack on the French troops. Anita reminds her brother that the soul of their father, killed by the French invader, is waiting to be avenged. Rodrigo then asks Anita if he can aspire to her love, to which she expresses to herself, with a certain melancholy, that her heart belongs to another man.
Anita prays for the victory and freedom of her country in the battle, renouncing her condition as a woman, which prevents her from fighting. Later she remembers when she was pursued by a group of bandits and how a handsome foreign man saved her life and her honour. From then on, it is he whom she loves. This young foreigner is Gastone, a French soldier, who at that moment comes in seriously wounded, asking for help. She recognises him and treats his wounds. They declare their love for each other, and Anita warns him that he is in enemy territory, forcing him to hide in his bedroom, as her brother has returned victorious from the battle. Rodrigo and Manuelo celebrate the victory over the invader. The latter tells Anita how Rodrigo has avenged them, killing Colonel D’Aubray, responsible for the death of his father. They all toast happily, while Anita thinks of Gastone, hidden in his own house. Rodrigo declares his love to the young woman again, and Manuelo asks his sister to grant his request for love. Anita promises Rodrigo an answer tomorrow. Suddenly, Gastone leaves the room where he was to face his enemies, in front of Anita’s suffering. Manuelo calls out to his sister, cursing her for having given shelter to the son of his father’s murderer. Gastone is taken prisoner. In his cell, Gastone laments his fate and thinks of Anita’s love. She appears in the prison to save him. Gastone refuses to escape and leave her alone, until he agrees and escapes from his dungeon. Rodrigo arrives at the cell and discovers that for love Anita has freed the enemy, thereby betraying the country. A shot is heard in the distance; it is Gastone who has fallen mortally wounded. Rodrigo, full of jealousy and anguish, his heart wounded, kills Anita.
The opera concludes with the singing of the National Anthem, at the moment when General Don Porfirio Díaz makes his triumphant entry into the city of Puebla.
