ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Actéon , AWV 26, is a French comic opera in one act, music by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber , libretto by Eugène Scribe , premiered in 1836 in Paris. The story is taken from the legend of Actéon in Greek mythology, a hunter punished by the goddess Diana .
This act, which Messrs. Scribe and Auber conceived together, was a simple interlude intended for the Opera as an intermission for its shows. The work was created on January 23, 1836at the Opéra-Comique at the Salle de la Bourse. He followed Mme Damoreau to the Opéra-Comique, and it was with this piece that she made her debut there. According to Le Ménestrel of the time, the opera owes its success in part to the singer.
Synopsis
A jealous husband, Prince Aldobrandi, has locked up a young and pretty woman in a magnificent villa in Sicily . A sister of the prince, a swarm of ladies and a page who bears the title of Sigisbe (the author is strangely mistaken about the true meaning of this name), form the princess’s entire society. In this retreat, people paint, make music, talk, meditate and get bored, because there is no one there to animate this dreary existence; no one on whom coquetry and the desire to please can be exercised. No love, therefore, no joy.
Count Leoni, a gallant lord of the surrounding area, seeks the hand of the prince’s sister; he wants to enter the villa, he wants to attract these ladies to a party he is giving in his palace. In vain efforts! inside and out, jealousy keeps all the gates closed. No one can enter, no one can leave. He then disguises himself as a blind beggar. In this disguise, he enters the castle. Princess Aldobrandi has begun a painting representing Actaeon surprising Diana and her nymphs in the bath . The painting remains unfinished; she has no model for the figure of Actaeon. The blind man will pose. But the young sister who is to appear among the nymphs has recognized her lover; she blushes to appear half-naked before eyes that she knows are clairvoyant. It must be done, however; for if Leoni is discovered, Aldobrandi will strike him with a dagger that he always carries on him. The groups are organized.
The young page arrives; he is delighted to contemplate this spectacle; the adolescent came to seek the answer to a letter of appointment that he had written to his beautiful mistress. The blind man sees the little rascal who devours with his eyes the charms of his own fiancée, he denounces him. Count Leoni is recognized. They kiss. He will marry the sister of the prince, who from now on will pose himself for the head of Actaeon.
