Composed based on a libretto by José de Cañizares, one of the most sought-after and famous playwrights of the first half of the 18th century in Spain, Acis y Galatea premiered at the Real Coliseo del Buen Retiro in Madrid on December 19, 1708. It had such a good reception among the public that continued to be represented for two decades. Acis y Galatea is considered one of the first Italian-style zarzuelas. In it, Literes (whose 350th anniversary of his birth is celebrated this year) intertwines the genuine Spanish style, represented by the choirs and seguidillas, with the recited and beautiful da capo arias more typical of Italian currents.
