Prologue
Cell of the Spaso-Borodino Monastery. Abbess Maria rereads the letters of her deceased husband Alexander Tuchkov. Her memories are so heavy that, unable to cope with an attack of inconsolable grief, she burns all the letters.

Picture one
House of the Naryshkins. Margarita’s parents Mikhail Petrovich and Varvara Alekseevna are discussing a funny article in a magazine. Mikhail Petrovich recalls a simple French song that he liked to sing with friends in his youth. During the singing guests appear. They want to hear something else, but the owner of the house asks his daughter Margarita to sing. She sings one of her favorite songs. Her voice makes a strong impression on one of the guests – Alexander Tuchkov.

Picture two
Tuchkov’s estate. Alexander and Margarita are happily married. Most recently, their son Nikolai was born. Alexander wrote a letter of resignation from military service so that he would never be separated from his family. However, without receiving a response from the command, he will be forced to leave Margarita with the child on the estate and go back to the regiment. At night, Margarita has a dream: two unfamiliar, terrible people speak French, constantly repeating the phrase: “Your fate will be decided at Borodino.” In fear, Margarita wakes up. Together with Alexander, they are looking for this unknown place on the map, but they do not find it. Her husband reassures her, saying that this is just a dream, and Margarita falls asleep.

Picture three
Several months have passed since the Battle of Borodino, but tens of thousands of soldiers who died in the battle have not been interred. Local peasants come here to start burying the remains of the fallen. The hieromonk reads the prayer for the dead and burns incense. Margarita appears, she is looking for the body of her husband Alexander. The hieromonk retells to her the details of the heroic death of General Tuchkov on the Semyonovsky Fleches, heard from one soldier. However, Margarita, who never found her husband’s body, still believes that he is alive.

Epilogue
The cell of the Spaso-Borodino Monastery, founded by Tuchkova at the site of her husband’s death. Abbess Maria remembers Alexander. The nun Devorra enters. She comforts mother Maria, talking about how all the sisters in the monastery love their abbess, and announces the beginning of the ceremony dedicated to the anniversary of the battle. Together they go to the Borodino field. Signals sound. Troops line up for the opening of the monument to fallen soldiers.
