“Poem in Memory of Sergei Yesenin” (1956) is one of the most significant works of Georgy Sviridov and one of the finest works of Soviet music.

The history of the origin of this work began with Sviridov’s passion for Yesenin’s poems, as a result of which in the fall of 1955 the first monologue song “I am the last poet of the village…” was composed for tenor and piano. This is where the idea of a chamber vocal cycle arose, which was realized in the “Poem in Memory of Sergei Yesenin.” The “Poem” was composed with great passion, fervor and inspiration. Within just two weeks, the large work, consisting of ten parts, was completed. Already in the process of work, it became clear to Sviridov that the scale of the “Poem” concept went beyond the boundaries of the chamber genre and required a different solution. And at the beginning of 1956, a new, final version was created – for soloist (tenor), mixed choir and symphony orchestra.

The composer himself spoke about the idea of the “Poem”, about its content: “In this work, I wanted to recreate the appearance of the poet himself, the drama of his lyrics, his inherent passionate love of life and that truly boundless love for the people that makes his poetry always exciting. It is these features of the work of this wonderful poet that are dear to me. And I wanted to say this in the language of music. I took the words of S. Yesenin as the epigraph to the poem: … most of all, Love for my native land tormented and burned me .” (S. Yesenin. Stanzas) Having highlighted “love for the native land” as the main theme, it is through the prism of this theme that Sviridov paints Yesenin himself – a great and beautiful Russian poet, a “peasant son”, inextricably linked with the people, with the land, with Homeland – Russia.
