In cooperation with the Bolshoi Theater of Russia in Nizhny Novgorod, the legendary performance of the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, artistic director of the Alexandrinsky Theater, director Valery Fokin, will be recreated.
“For any theater in Russia, cooperation with the Bolshoi Theater is a high bar, confirming the professional level of the team. The Nizhny Novgorod Opera House, together with the production team of the Bolshoi Theater, will present one of the world’s best interpretations of the opera The Queen of Spades, directed by Valery Fokin. He carefully approached the legacy of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and enriched the opera with interesting visual solutions. In technical terms, this is a very difficult performance! Scenery and costumes from the Bolshoi Theater were transported on six trucks. We thank the Nizhny Novgorod company ITECO for the free assistance in transportation,” said Oleg Berkovich, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
“The history of the two theater groups is closely linked by the name of Boris Alexandrovich Pokrovsky. For a long time he was the chief director of the Bolshoi Theater, where he came in 1943 from the post of artistic director of the Gorky Opera and Ballet Theater. And we are glad that today the cooperation between the two theaters continues. We want to present the most correct adaptation of Valery Fokin’s performance, of course, taking into account the technical and creative capabilities of our theater. The work done by director Valery Fokin and stage designer Alexander Borovsky is absolutely unique. They created, probably, the most “Petersburg” reading of this very “Petersburg” opera in the world repertoire. This performance is rare in terms of the integrity of the artistic expression”,
