The Polish Romni poet Bronislawa Waijs (known as Papusza) has been making a comeback in Roma circles for about 5 years. She taught herself to read and write and had survived World War II and Nazi persecution hiding in the Polish forest. When she had her poetry (written in Romany) translated into Polish, she was brought before a Roma court (Kris) and expelled from her union for revealing Roma secrets. Because of this trauma, she spent more than six months in a psychiatric ward and this is exactly where the directing concept of director Bruno Berger-Gorski, who is experienced in contemporary music theatre, comes into play. Under his artistic direction, the association he founded, Musiktheater Wien eV, has already produced chamber operas by Josef Tal and Ella Milch-Sheriff as Austrian premieres in Salzburg. Berger-Gorski has been staging chamber operas by Peter Eötvös, Salvatore Sciarrino, Knut Vaage and Adriana Hölzky for years, where he has often combined works psychologically and dramaturgically. Two years ago he commissioned works from contemporary Roma composers and asked the Roma playwright and author Ruzdija Russo Seijdovic to write a libretto on the subject of “Papusza”. Adrian Gaspar composed the libretto for “Rromano Kidipe” himself from quotes by Karl Stojka, poems by Bronsilawa Wajs and his memories of personal conversations with Hugo Höllenreiner and edited it together with Berger-Gorski.
The director Berger-Gorski managed to combine the two works “Papusza’s Tears” and “Rromano Kidipe” in an ideal way by setting the action in a nursing home/psychiatric institution and the audience in the first work “Papusza’s Tears” (a very interesting small orchestra by Adrian Gaspar with only one piano, bass clarinet and viola) gets to know the life of Papusza and in the second work (“Rromano Kidipe”, composed for string quintet) an imaginary meeting between Papusza and the concentration camp survivor Karl Stojka and Sinti Hugo Höllenreiner
