ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Two rival families and an impossible love: we know the story. And yet we never cease to rediscover it, to be moved by it, to vibrate again and again for the two sacrificed lovers. Romeo and Juliet is a heritage of world culture which lends itself to all rereadings and transpositions, moving from the New York of the 1950s (West Side Story) to that of the 1980s (China Girl by Abel Ferrara) and even, why not , to the decks and holds of the Titanic. In this respect, the re-interpretation offered by the opera Les Cercles Sacrés is probably the most original and the most invigorating that has ever been proposed.
Here are Nzailu and Dara, two slaves exploited to build what would become modern Brazil, from rival African tribes, the Bantu and the Nagô. Their love is inevitably doomed to failure, especially as immaterial beings influence the course of their destinies – divinities working from a parallel and invisible world which refers to the myth of the Orixás, these gods of the African animist cult called Candomblé in Brazil. Transposing the Shakespearean drama to the era of slavery in Brazil, this opera offers itself as a dizzying, intense dive into the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture.
Captured in Salvador de Bahia, the opera Les Cercles Sacrés is orchestrated by the conductor Aldo Brizzi, a collaborator in particular with the director Alfredo Arias, with whom he had signed a resounding Mambo Mistico at the Théâtre de Chaillot, winner of the 2005 Souffleurs Prize for best lyrical music. Trained in the 1970s in composition and conducting in Italy, Aldo Brizzi has lived in Brazil since 1998 where, alongside lyrical music, he composes for the biggest stars of the Brazilian and Portuguese scene, from Gilberto Gil to Caetano Veloso, via Tom Zé and Teresa Salgueiro. His songs make the link between contemporary and popular music, as the composer is attached to a dialogue between cultures. An attachment that culminates in the creation of a center dedicated to this dialogue: the “Núcleo de Ópera da Bahia”, of which he has been the director since 2016.
