The masterpiece of the Golden Age, ‘Life is a Dream’, by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, is presented as a new opera with a libretto and music by Colombian artists. This completely unpublished stage version of ‘Life is a Dream’, which brings the story of Segismundo, Rosaura and Basilio to the language of opera, had its world premiere at the Alcalá Clásicos Festival, in Spain, in June 2023 and is presented for the first time in Colombia.
‘Life is a dream’ premiered at the Alcalá Clásicos Festival in Spain in June 2023. For its premiere performances it had the support of the Colombian Embassy in Spain.
Co-production of the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo, La Chapelle Harmonique, Center National de la Musique and Ibero-American Festival of the Golden Age of the Community of Madrid: Classics in Alcalá.
Juan Pablo Carreño – Composer
He studied composition at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana with Guillermo Gaviria and Harold Vásquez and at Florida International University with Orlando Jacinto García. In Paris he joined Jean-Luc Hervé’s composition class at the Nanterre Conservatory and in 2006 he entered the composition program of the Paris Conservatory, where he won a first prize in composition in 2010 under the tutelage of Gérard Pesson.
In 2013, his video-opera ‘Claws of Gold’, composed from the Colombian silent film of the same name from the 1920s, premiered in Paris. Then, in 2015, ‘La digitale’, a chamber opera about the effects of digitoxin poisoning commissioned by the Marseille Opera and the Musicatreinze ensemble with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Musical Foundation. Later, this work was revived at the Teatro Colón in Bogotá.
In addition, his work ‘A Mass for Reconciliation’ was premiered in 2019 at the Primate Cathedral of Colombia. This work for large orchestra, choirs and soloists was composed from testimonies of victims of violence in Colombia by commission since the signing of the 2016 Peace Agreement by the Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the National University and Nova et Vetera, with the support from the Ernst von Siemens Musical Foundation.
