La calesera is a zarzuela in three acts, the second divided into two scenes, in prose and verse, with a libretto by Madrid-born Emilio González del Castillo and Luis Martínez Román and music by Granada-born Francisco Alonso .
It was premiered on December 12 , 1925 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, with enormous success. Later it would also premiere at the Apollo Theater in Paris ( 1927 ), the San Luis Theater in Lisbon and in theaters in several Latin American capitals.
The work began production in 1922 but was not finished until hours before the premiere because maestro Alonso could not come up with the angular phrase of the final baritone romance .
The libretto tells a love story, set in the romantic Madrid of the time of Luis Candelas , in which a love triangle intervenes: a comedian and tonadillera named la calesera and a marquesita, confronted by a heroic liberal.
The work, considered one of the most successful works for Francisco Alonso, allowed the exhibition of the great inspiration, passionate emotion and certain frivolity, characteristic of the author. Some fragments allow the performers to shine, such as the Hymn to Liberty , The Parade of the Chisperos or the Romanza del Baritone .
The action takes place in Madrid and in a hostel near the French border in the year 1832.
