ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Staged performance of the oratorio
At the opening concert of the 2017 Budapest International Choir Competition, Bach’s János Passion (BWV 245) was performed in a stage version, directed by Gábor Sylvie. In this work, the composer uses the time technique known from stage works, operas and plays: by speeding up real time, the Evangelist summarizes the events, while the scenes with an almost operatic dramaturgy, in which the choir symbolizing the crowd of the time is the protagonist, take place in real time. Stopping time, the soloists speak, commenting on the events and portraying the emotions of the believers of the time.
At the same time, the chorales that sound in the passion show eternity and the experience of the noblest community togetherness.
