ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Johann Sebastian Bach has been the focus of the Ansbach Bach Week for 75 years. His St. John Passion forms the conclusion of the anniversary edition, with the Windsbach Boys’ Choir, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and an ensemble of exquisite soloists.

When the opening chorus of the St. John Passion was heard for the first time on Good Friday, April 7, 1724 in Leipzig’s Nikolaikirche, the audience heard music of unprecedented vocal-symphonic power and magnitude. With this bang, Johann Sebastian Bach, who had been called to Leipzig the previous year, introduced himself to the public in the field of passion.

For 75 years, the Ansbach Bach Week has dedicated itself tirelessly and with great cultural appeal to the work of the Thomaskantor – which is why his St. John Passion is the crowning glory of the anniversary edition this year. It is sung by a choir that was present at the Bach Week in Ansbach right from the start and was able to immediately attract the attention of the international Bach community, even though it came from a small town nearby: The Windsbacher Knabenchor.

There is also the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and an exquisite soloist ensemble with Dorothee Mields, Terry Wey, Patrick Grahl, Thomas Laske and Tobias Berndt. The new director of the Windsbach Boys’ Choir, Ludwig Böhme, is on the podium.
