ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
@Emele – a light opera, performed for the first time on 9th July 2021. This is a Simmonds and Willcock production as performed by the Oxfordshire Contempory Opera at Wheatley House, Wheatley.
“@emele is a contemporary light hearted twist on Handel’s great Semele. A cheating government minister, an abandoned wife and a scheming press agent who turns on his boss: Sound familiar? Any similarity is entirely intentional.
These are all characters in @emele, the first production since lockdown by Oxfordshire Contemporary Opera. The heroine is an Instagram influencer and her lover, Jupiter, is in disguise as a government minister who aims to be ‘King of the world’. His vengeful wife, Juno, and Mercury, the messenger God who becomes a Cummingsesque figure, conspire to twist the press and public opinion. Comedy, plotting and intrigue abound until Jupiter gets his come-uppance in a #metoo ending.”
