ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The Violet of Montmartre is an operetta in three acts by the Hungarian composer Emmerich Kálmán. The libretto was written by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald. The premiere took place on March 21, 1930 in Vienna at the Johann Strauss Theater. The first performance in Hungary took place on April 12, 1935 at the Király Színház in Budapest under the title A montmartrei ibolya.

Plot
First act
In the Montmartre district of Paris, three artists live together with little money: the painter Raoul, the composer Florimond and the writer Henri. The painter initially has his lover Ninon as a model for a picture of Aphrodite. They get into an argument and break up. Violetta also loves the painter, but doesn’t show it openly. Since no one has any money, she sells a medallion so she can buy food. A bailiff appears, but to everyone’s astonishment he doesn’t want to seize anything, but instead brings a large sum of money that was given to the artists by a patron. The three artists use the unexpected windfall to buy Violetta out of her dependence on her guardian.

Second act
Ninon has gained a new friend and patron, the Minister of Art Pipo de Frascati. With his support, she became a well-known vaudeville singer. She still loves the painter Raoul and stays close to him. Violetta gets the minister to get Raoul a job as a restorer at the Louvre. However, Ninon receives thanks for her supposed help. The artist trio is freed from their repeated financial worries and the bailiff when Florimond’s latest operetta is accepted.

Third act
Florimond’s operetta was a great success. Ninon is the award-winning singer of the evening. When she receives a farewell letter from Raoul, she leaves the theater angry. Violetta takes on her role and saves the performance. Meanwhile, a Baron Rothschild asks about the seller of the medallion. He tells Violetta that she is Countess Bernini and has a lot of money. Violetta and Raoul finally come together
