Marij Kogoj (1892-1956) was considered the main representative of the Slovenian avant-garde between the summers of 1919 and 1922, and his works are classified as musical expressionism. His most important work is the opera Black Mask, for which Marij Kogoj and Josip Vidmar wrote a libretto based on a play by the Russian writer Leonid Andreyev. The first performance of the opera was in 1929 (conductor Mirko Polič), the next performances were in 1957 (conductor Samo Hubad), 1990 (conductor Anton Nanut) and in 2012 with conductor Uroš Lajovec, the recording of which we present to you. The 80-page score of Black Masks, untouched for many years, to the self-sacrificing and knowledgeable work of the internationally renowned conductor Uroš Lajovic, came to the stage in the summer of 2012 in a new updated version. The performance of the opera was co-produced by SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana, Opera and Ballet SNG Maribor, European Capital of Culture Maribor 2012, during its performance, Janez Burger (play director), Uroš Lajovic (conductor and score editor), Alan Hranitelj (costume designer), Numen and Ivana Radenović (scenography), main soloists Jože Vidic, Andrej Debevec, Martina Zadro, Saša Čano, Peter Martinčič, Martin Sušnik and Darko Vidic and the ballet ensemble, opera choir and orchestra of SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana. The recording was made at one of the Ljubljana performances under the auspices of the Music and Ballet Broadcasting Department of Television Slovenia, broadcast editor Daniel Celarec, editorial editor Danica Dolinar, director Igor Zupe. Numen and Ivana Radenović (scenography), main soloists Jože Vidic, Andrej Debevec, Martina Zadro, Saša Čano, Peter Martinčič, Martin Sušnik and Darko Vidic, as well as the ballet ensemble, opera choir and orchestra of SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana. The recording was made at one of the Ljubljana performances under the auspices of the Music and Ballet Broadcasting Department of Television Slovenia, broadcast editor Daniel Celarec, editorial editor Danica Dolinar, director Igor Zupe.
