Presided over by Her Majesty the Queen, the XX extraordinary concert ‘In Memoriam’ in tribute to the victims of terrorism, live from the National Auditorium, with comments by Eva Sandoval.
Maestro Pablo Gonzalez conducts the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir with Beethoven’s ninth symphony as the main work on the programme. Marco Antonio García de Paz is the principal conductor of the RTVE Choir.
The concert begins with the third movement entitled ‘Once de marzo’ of the work ‘Final’, by the Zaragoza composer Jesús Torres (b.1965), a piece for mezzo-soprano and orchestra composed in 2017 “in memory of the victims of the 9/11 attack March 2004 in Madrid” and inspired by the death of the author’s mother. The work, which will feature the mezzo-soprano from the RTVE Choir Esmeralda Espinosa as soloist, is a reflection on life and death, it is impregnated with dense lyricism and its text is a poem by Alejandro Duque Amusco.
Next, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir will perform ‘Symphony No. 9 in D minor Op. 125’, also known as the ‘Choral’, by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) with the soloists Jone Martínez (soprano) , Cristina Faus (mezzo-soprano), José Luis Sola (tenor) and Sebastià Peris (baritone). With its four movements, ‘Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso’, ‘Scherzo. Molto vivace’, ‘Adagio molto e cantabile’ and ‘Finale. Presto’, is one of the most performed pieces of the classical repertoire.
