The piece refers to the well-known historical episode that involved Camila O’Gorman, a young woman from high society who fell in love with the priest Ladislao Gutiérrez, and fled with him at the end of 1847 and was captured and shot along with the priest in August of the following year. .
This tragic opera in a prologue, two acts and an epilogue – says Alberto Balzanelli – “is composed based on a play by Jorge Bosch, winner of the Poblet Prize. We worked together passionately for many years. I wrote the script with his authorization, adapting it to the needs of the lyric and trying to preserve the essence of the drama. An investigator of absolute rigor, each of the sentences that Bosch puts in the mouths of the characters are duly documented. I hope that with my music I have served a masterful book in its monologues and dialogues and with beautiful poetry.”
The composer, orchestra and choir director and pedagogue Alberto Balzanelli was born in Buenos Aires in 1941. He wrote music for piano, ballet and chamber music, cantatas for choir and orchestra and a cappella choirs. “Camila O’Gorman” is his second opera after “The Wizard of Dreams.”
The mathematician, epistemologist, educator and writer Jorge Bosch (1925-2011) was a professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the National University of La Plata, Rector of the CAECE University and member of the Academy of Sciences of Buenos Aires. He published twenty books, including plays and essays.
