ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
This one-act chamber opera by Robert Ely [music] and Peter Scott-Presland [words] is Episode 7 of the 17-part cycle ‘A Gay Century’: scenes from gay life 1900 – 2001. The cycle opens with Queen Victoria visiting Oscar Wilde on his deathbed, and culminates with the first experimental civil partnerships introduced by Ken Livingstone. Victoria vs Wilde, repression vs liberation, runs as an epic struggle through the whole cycle. In the last episode a portait of Victoria is replaced with a portrait of Oscar Wilde.
This was the first of the series to be performed, thanks to a grant from the Arts Council, England
