  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

    Stephan Winkler
Berlin, studied composition and cello, and later also conducting in Berlin and elsewhere. His composing can be described as an act of transformation: He translates spoken language, such as texts by Max Goldt, as well as illustrated stories – including those by comic artists Eugen Egner and Jim Woodring – into the medium of music according to his own stringent rules. The post-production process of reworking the sound of electronic soundtracks is part of his work as a composer.

In Stephan Winkler’s small-scale musical theater piece ZUMUTUNG for child soprano, tenor, five instruments, and recordings, the relationship between intimacy and its publicity is balanced in four mini-acts and a so-called “Blüschentanz” based on the comic “Black Hole” by Charles Burns. Doppelgänger and isolated individuality, illusory and real, sketchy and garishly colorful elements interpenetrate, competing in sound and image, in song and word.

A musical theater chamber piece for child soprano, tenor, and five instrumentalists based on the novella “Black Hole” by Charles Burns and a poem by Michel Houellebecq.
Commissioned for the Salzburg Pocket Opera Festival 2023
